Geographical Investigation 2013

Geographical Investigation at Bishop’s Quarter Beach
On Tuesday the 5th of March the 5th year geography class of 30 students, along with their teacher Ms. Sheridan went to Bishop’s Quarter beach, Ballyvaughan, Co.Clare. As part of the Geography leaving certificate syllabus students have to complete a fieldwork investigation which is worth 20% of the total exam. The fieldwork assignment is complete as a whole class group and individually writing up by students afterwards.
This fieldwork allows students to develop key geographical skills and gives them an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom. Each student used various types of equipment to complete tasks such measuring longshore drift, wind speed and direction. They also studied a variety of deposition features including sand dunes and a spit. Not only did students apply their geography knowledge on the day they also have the chance to show off their artistic skills by sketching the beach as illustrated by the above photograph.
Students worked very hard on the day in teams (as displayed in the above photograph) and individually, really showing high levels of initiative and competitiveness. Overall students really enhanced their ability to become future geographical investigators, with the day being thoroughly enjoyed by all.
