Prep for Medicine day

14th February 2017

Two of our TY students; Rachael McNamara and Shannon Waterstone were lucky enough to be chosen to participate in a Prep for Med Day at UCC recently. They started off in the Flame Lab where trainee doctors, nurses and other health professionals use plastic dummies and donated bodies to learn in-depth anatomy. Then they rotated around to different stations where they became more hands-on, learning how to check blood pressure, do CPR, help someone who is choking or bleeding and take a pulse. They were taught by current medical students and they really enjoyed being able to get involved and ask questions. After lunch, they went to Cork University Hospital where they had a very interesting and funny lecture on Forensics from one of the assistant state pathologists; Dr. Margaret Bolster. Next up was watching a live caesarean section via video link, which was extremely exciting and emotional! Finally, Dr. Van der Velde, a West Cork Rapid Response Physician, spoke to the students about emergency medicine and pre-hospital care. It was a very informative and enjoyable day that opened their eyes to the realities of medical training and the ensuing career.
