Scariff student wins Camogie all Ireland medal

Scariff-Ogonnelloe’s All Ireland Glory
Scariff Community College are very proud of Rachel Moloney one of our students who recently won an all ireland camogie medal in the 7 a side competition.
On Saturday the 14th of September ten members of the Scariff-Ogonnelloe team travelled to Dublin to take part in the mini 7s camogie blitz. It was the first time that Scariff-Ogonnelloe camogie team took part in this tournament since forming as one club in 2012. They entered into the shield competition which took place in Silverpark,Tudor Lawns, Stillorgan. The group games were 8 minutes a side and the final was 10 minutes a side.
The first game started at 10:30 leaving the girls little time to warm up as they travelled to Dublin that morning. Their first game was against Ballycran from Down. It was a tight match with Ballycran ahead at the break, but a strong effort from the start of the second half with two great goals from Mairead Scanlon, a past pupil of Scariff community college secured a win for Scariff-Ogonnelloe. Then again at 11:45 the east Clare girls faced Portobello a Dublin side. With a great performance once again Scariff-Ogonnelloe came out on top. With only one group game left Scariff-Ogonnelloe needed a victory against Kilmessan from Meath to secure a place in the shield quarter-final, they did exactly this with great team work from Susan Vaughan, Marian O Brien and Regina O Brien, all of whom are past pupils of Scariff community college.
The side were then set to play St. Josephs from Armagh in the quarter final. Excellent teamwork from all the girls especially Rachel Maloney, Ashling Corbett and Leanne Horan (Ashling and Leanne are both past pupils while Rachel is presently in Leaving Cert in our school) sealed an unexpected victory.
The side then travelled to Kilmacud Crokes to play Aglish from Tyrone in the semi-final, this game was extremely tight but with great work from Sarah O Donnell ( a past pupil) and Danielle Sheedy a victory was secured.
With Four Roads of Roscommon being victorious in the other semi-final the two sides were set to meet in the final at 5:30. With the unexpected success of Scariff-Ogonnelloe reaching the final stages of the tournament it meant they were unable to see the Clare U-21 hurlers in action, but with regular updates they set their eyes on the prize of bringing an All Ireland shield title back to Clare for the first time since 1993. After a shakey first few minutes with two goal chances narrowly missed out on by the Clare side they settled and at the break the odds were stacking up in our favour. With a very nervous second half Scariff-Ogonnelloe came out on top. Huge celebrations were in store for the girls who were delighted with their achievement. The final score was 4-4 to 1-10 which was a very high scoring game in just 20 minutes.
The team was as follows:
Ashling Corbett, Regina O Brien, Leanne Horan, Marian O Brien, Susan Vaughan, Mairead Scanlon, Sarah O Donnell, Danielle Sheedy, Rachel Maloney and Shannon McNamara.
