Transition Year Programme

The Transition Year programme of the College has been developed as an optional extra senior year to allow students who have just completed their Junior Certificate to develop educationally and personally without immediate examination pressure.  Transition Year is the bridge between the Junior and Leaving Certificate programmes.  The programme at Scariff Community College has been developed with the following objectives in mind:

  • to prepare students for Leaving Certificate – 40% of material covered in TY is core Leaving Certificate material
  • to assist the students’ maturation process through experiential learning and the discovery of areas of knowledge not normally studied in the curriculum for examination
  • to help the students to acquire vital life skills through in-house and external work experience
  • to teach the students organisational and research techniques and how to function as a team member
  • to ensure students' competence in Information Technology.  Transition Year completes the ECDL course in computing and gains the accredited qualification

The course is broad-based, incorporating mainline subjects such as Languages, Maths and Sciences but also a wide variety of other educational experiences, such as:

  • Psychology
  • Information Technology
  • Media Studies
  • Enterprise Education
  • Pottery and Painting
  • Music Appreciation
