SCC Compete in All-Ireland Secondary Schools’ Orienteering Championships
A group of 19 students competed in the All-Ireland Secondary Schools’ Orienteering Championships, at Emo Woods, Co. Laois on April 25th. The start was delayed by nearly two hours due to vandalism on the course, so it was hard for all the competitors to stay warm and motivated. It was a good opportunity to meet and chat to the other competitors from different schools who are mostly based in Leinster or Cork, where the sport of orienteering is very strong. We were the only school representing Co. Clare. Thankfully the weather was kind and it was a beautiful setting with the bluebells in full bloom.
The courses for each age category were long, with some controls demanding precise map reading skills. We had students from 1st to 6th year competing, with everyone enjoying the experience as well as producing some good results. Progress Falola, Jorga Kelly and James Bugler all finished in the top 20, (2nd – 3rd year category). Furthermore, our first-year girls’ team comprising of Anna Bell, Ainoa Brennan, Emily Dinan, Emily Fitzmaurice, Shauna Hickey, Saraid McNamara, Sarah Olumuyiwa and Peace Uhebagwi finished in 3rd place. A particular mention for Saraid and Ainoa who finished in 10th & 11th place respectively.
