Gaisce Awards 2020

Some members of our TY 2020 Class were last week presented with their Gaisce Awards. One student Noel Mc Grath details here a summary of his Gaisce Journey.
I completed Gaisce as part of Transition Year. Gaisce is a self-development program for young people between the ages of 15-25 and has been in existence since 1985.  I completed the bronze award and it had four different aspects to it.  Community Involvement
I volunteered to be part of the student council for the 13 week requirement.
Personal skill
I completed the ECDL course to improve my IT skills. This took 26 weeks to complete.

TY Wreath Making Workshop

Last Thursday the TY’s were fortunate enough to attend a wreath making workshop run by Natalie. This workshop lasted just over an hour and was a very enjoyable experience. We were immediately drawn to the the GP by the festive smell of fresh pines. Natalie was kind enough to bring lots of Christmassy foliage and decorations ranging from holly and pine cones, to ribbon and baubles. Geography Awareness Week at Scariff Community College

LOCAL geography has come to life for second years at Scariff Community College, where students are making a submission to a review of the County Development Plan.
Under the guidance of teacher Darina Sheridan and with support from Carmel Brislane, a planner with the council, the students are making their voices heard on the future of the school’s catchment area of Scariff, Mountshannon and Whitegate.

Fun Friday 4 First Years

To celebrate their First Term in Secondary school our first years had a  Fun Friday yesterday a great start to the Mid Term.  Students took part in a Dance Class with Dance in out Ireland . They also took part in a Walking quiz and Team Trials under the guidance of their PE Teachers Ms Mortell and Ms O Brien.  Thanks to Derg Isle for the loan of equipment for the Team Challenges and to Angela Didek from Dance it Out Ireland, our TY helpers and all involved for making it an enjoyable morning. SCC students take to the Airwaves

Tune into Scariff Bay FM this Saturday morning September 19 where you can hear two of our second year students Laoise Giblin and Caolfhionn Madden present their programme on the Saturday Chronicle. The girls have been working for some time with the local radio station which has it’s recording studio based in Scariff. TY Students – Busy at work

Our Transition Year students this week have been taking advantage of the lovely fine weather to get out and about working on the school grounds. The girls have been preparing a raised bed for planting “Andrea’s garden” – a memorial garden to honor Ms Andrea Mc Mahon a teacher who gave so much to our school before her untimely death some years ago. The girls cleared up around the garden and carried out some much need renovations after our absence from the school over recent months. TY Students Visit Derg Isle

Last week, we  the  new TY’s enjoyed a fun and adventurous time at Derg Isle. Thankfully the weather was nice on both days which made the trip more enjoyable. On the first day we got split into three different groups and each group got to try out different activities such as the obstacle course, rock climbing, kayaking and paddle boarding. The obstacle course was very tiring but fun and helped us bond together better as a year group. The rock climbing wall was challenging but was definitely worth the climb for the view.
