Subject : Visual Art

Teacher : Maria Curtin

Brief overview of the subject:

Art, Craft and Design is the expression of creative skill in a visual form. It emphasises ideas, feelings, and visual qualities through imaginative and technical skill. Design encompasses the process of planning, problem solving and creating a design in response to a brief.

Over the three years studying Visual Art from 1st year to 3rd year, students cover 45 Learning Outcomes from 3 Strands (Strand 1 –Art, Strand 2 – Craft, Strand 3 – Design)

Students study Painting, Graphic Design, Fabric Printing, and Three Dimensional work (e.g. Clay)

CBA’s and Assessment Task: (JC Only)

CBA 1 = January to March of 2nd Year

Students receive three themes to research. They research, experiment, practice and develop ideas and techniques from a range of primary sources (e.g. objects) based on one theme from the brief. From these drawings they design and make a final piece (e.g. 3D Clay piece under the Craft Strand)

CBA 2 = September to November of 3rd Year

The State Examinations Commission issues students with a brief containing three themes.  Students are required to research, experiment, practice and develop ideas and techniques from a range of primary sources based on one theme.

Final Assessment/Assessment Task = November to April of 3rd Year

The State Examinations Commission issues students with a workbook.

Students complete 5 A3 pages of drawings, further developing their visual ideas and observations from their CBA 2. From the drawings, experimentations, observations and annotations recorded by the students, they complete 2 finished pieces (one from the Art Strand e.g. Painting and one from the Design Strand e.g. Graphic Design or Fabric Printing). The workbook also requires students to document the feedback that they received and to reflect and evaluate their own work.
